Magnitude of post-urethroplasty urinary tract infections in children with hypospadias at a tertiary hospital in Kenya
Journal of Pediatric Urology May 20, 2021
Irene M, Osawa F, Kuria K, et al. - This study was attempted to ascertain the magnitude of urinary tract infections after urethroplasty for hypospadias in children at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), a tertiary hospital in Kenya. Researchers conducted a prospective descriptive cross-sectional study including a total of 83 male children with hypospadias who underwent urethroplasty between January 2014 to December 2018 (5years) at KNH with an age range from 6 months to 18 years. They used an appropriate urine collection method to collect the urine specimen for microscopy, culture, and sensitivity tests. The data illustrate that urinary tract infections are not a common finding in children who underwent urethroplasty for hypospadias at KNH. As per the findings, individuals with penoscrotal hypospadias seem to be at a higher risk of developing urinary tract infections in our institution with E. Coli being the commonest bacteria implicated. In addition, the antibiotic protocol should be based on local culture and sensitivity patterns.
