Anesthesiology Research and Practice Jul 10, 2019
Tamire T, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the magnitude of and factors associated with awareness with recall under general anesthesia via conducting an institution-based cross-sectional study on 1065 patients who underwent surgery under general anesthesia. Using the modified Brice questionnaire, they detected awareness under general anesthesia. They used interviewer-administered structured questionnaire and chart review. In SPSS version 20 computer software, they inscribed the data with complete information. Among 1065 patients, the response rate of 90.7% was reported. Under general anesthesia, they noted the magnitude of awareness with recall of 8.2%; of which, 4.9%, 2.6%, and 0.7% of patients reported hearing voice, pain, and sensation of breathing tube, respectively. This study indicated a higher magnitude of awareness with recall under general anesthesia compared to other studies. Lack of premedication was only identified to be associated with awareness with recall under general anesthesia was observed. This emphasizes providing premedication to prevent the possibility of awareness under general anesthesia.
