Macular and retinal nerve fibre layer thickness in pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus
Clinical Ophthalmology May 07, 2020
Tengku-Fatishah A, et al. - Researchers sought to determine mean macular and retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness in pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in a teaching institution in Malaysia. In addition, they examined correlation of age, HbA1c level, duration of GDM, type of treatment, family history, previous history of GDM and spherical equivalent with the macular and RNFL thickness. In this prospective and cross-sectional study, 78 pregnant women with GDM, 72 healthy pregnant and 70 healthy non-pregnant women were included. The three groups had mean macular thickness of 236.08 (16.44) μm, 237.26 (22.42) μm and 240.66 (20.95) μm. This suggests that thickness of the macular and RNFL in pregnant women with GDM was similar to that of the healthy pregnant and healthy non-pregnant women. Mean macular and retinal thickness in pregnant women with GDM was not identified to be significantly associated with age, HbA1c, duration of diabetes, treatment received, history of GDM and spherical equivalent
