Lymphovascular invasion and extranodal tumour extension are risk indicators of breast cancer related lymphoedema: An observational retrospective study with long-term follow-up
BMC Cancer Oct 04, 2018
Invernizzi M, et al. - Given that breast cancer related lymphoedema (BCRL) is seen in a considerable share of breast cancer survivors and contributes greatly to patients’ disability, researchers investigated new bona fide predictors of BCRL occurrence and performed an integrative characterization of 332 cases of surgically-treated node-positive breast cancers with 2–10.2 years of follow-up. They found BCRL-free survival was negatively influenced by both peritumoral lymphovascular invasion (LVI) and extranodal extension (ENE) of the metastasis and therefore, they recommended integrating assessment of LVI and ENE with clinical and surgical data to improve BCRL risk stratification.
