Lymph node number, surface area and lymph node ratio are important prognostic indicators in neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy treated rectal cancer
Journal of Clinical Pathology Feb 27, 2020
Pitto F, Zoppoli G, Scabini S, et al. - In a large retrospective, monocentric, series of post-neoCRT-RC individuals, researchers intended to investigate the importance of lymph node (LN) number, ratio and surface area in predicting metastases, overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). This study included a total of 104 individuals with RC who underwent total mesorectal excision, after standard neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (neoCRT). This study obtained the following data regarding LNs: total numbers; number with metastases; LNratio (metastatic/total); maximum diameter; surface area. There was a statistically significant relationship between LN number and DFS. The outcomes of this study displayed that LN number, LN ratio, and LN surface area are important prognostic factors in neoCRT-RC and in particular finding ≤ 9 or > 20 LNs is prognostically adverse.
