Lupus is associated with poorer outcomes after primary total hip arthroplasty
Lupus May 31, 2019
Singh JA, et al. - Researchers examined how lupus influence the outcomes after primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). Using the 1998–2014 US National Inpatient Sample data, they identified 4,116,485 primary THA hospitalizations; among these, 22,557 (0.5%) were in patients with lupus. Outcomes revealed a correlation of lupus with a higher risk of implant infection, transfusion, discharge to an inpatient facility and higher hospital charges post-primary THA. Younger cases, more frequently females, cases with African-American or Hispanic origin, cases living in the South, or having Medicaid insurance, and having higher comorbidity or lower income were noted to suffer from lupus.
