Lung ultrasound for the diagnosis of pneumonia in children with acute bronchiolitis
BMC Pulmonary Medicine Dec 13, 2018
Biagi C, et al. - Researchers evaluated the diagnostic accuracy and reliability of lung ultrasound (LUS) for the detection of pneumonia in hospitalized children with bronchiolitis. They also assessed the agreement between LUS and chest x-ray (CXR) in diagnosing pneumonia in these patients. Children admitted to the hospital in 2016–2017 with a diagnosis of bronchiolitis and undergone CXR because of clinical suspicion of concomitant pneumonia were enrolled. In diagnosing pneumonia in children with clinical bronchiolitis, LUS demonstrated good accuracy. When including only consolidation size > 1 cm, they noted higher specificity of LUS than CXR, avoiding the need to perform CXR in these patients. High inter-observer agreement was included in added benefit of LUS.
