Lung ultrasound compared to chest X‐ray for the diagnosis of CAP in children
Pediatrics International Mar 12, 2021
Bloise S, La Regina DP, Pepino D, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to examine the concordance between lung ultrasound (LUS) and chest X‐ray (CXR) in assessing specific signs of community‐acquired pneumonia (CAP) and to determine the sensitivity and specificity of LUS in CAP diagnosis compared with CXR, as well as to assess the role of LUS during the follow-up. They recruited 68 children (< 16 years old) who were admitted to the hospital between October 2018 and September 2019 with a clinical and radiological diagnosis of CAP (cases: N = 41), or no respiratory diseases (controls: N = 27) and had a CXR performed for clinical reasons. In 40/41 patients, a lung ultrasound confirmed the diagnosis of CAP. In the diagnosis and follow-up of CAP, the study found that LUS could be more beneficial than CXR.
