Lung cancer surgical treatment after solid organ transplantation: A single center 30-year experience
Lung Cancer Jan 07, 2020
Drevet G, Duruisseaux M, Maury JM, et al. - Researchers investigated morbidity, mortality and long-term survival after lung cancer surgical treatment in recipients of solid organ transplantation. For this observational study, the University of Lyon (France) Transplantation database and Thoracic Surgery database yielded medical records of 61 patients who had undergone surgical treatment for lung cancer after solid organ transplantation. The surgical procedures performed were 52 lobectomies, 7 pneumonectomies, and 2 wedge-resections. Ninety-day post-operative complications mainly included pneumonias that affected 31 patients (50.8 %). They noted 90-day postoperative mortality of 9.8 %. Despite these, they recommend offering surgical treatment for lung cancer to these patients, as it gives a chance to cure earlier-stage disease. Overall survival of 40.6 % was reported at 5 years and 18 % at 10 years indicating a satisfactory long-term survival rate that is similar to that of the general population. Close follow-up is emphasized for transplant recipients with former smoking history, to increase early lung cancer diagnosis among these.
