Lung cancer screening inconsistent with U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommendations
American Journal of Preventive Medicine Nov 22, 2018
Richards TB, et al. - Given that overuse of nonrecommended lung cancer screening tests in U.S. community practice and underuse of recommended tests has been suggested in prior studies, researchers attempted to offer a more complete description of lung cancer screening inconsistent with the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) criteria. They analyzed data from the 2010 and 2015 National Health Interview Surveys. They found that, with regards to lung cancer screening, the number of adults inappropriately screened vs those screened according to USPSTF recommendations was remarkably greater. A low prevalence of appropriate lung cancer screening was reported, along with a diminution of the population meeting USPSTF criteria. They suggested better processes to appropriately triage eligible individuals to screening, plus screening with a USPSTF-recommended test, would be beneficial to realize the potential benefits of screening.
