Lower risk of hip fractures among Swedish women with large hips?
Osteoporosis International Feb 08, 2018
Klingberg S, et al. - In this trial, the authors aimed to assess the relationship between the hip circumference (HC), measured at two different points of time, and hip fracture in a population-based sample of Swedish female, monitored for the incident hip fractures over several years. In midlife and in advanced age, a large HC was found to be protective against hip fracture. However, the correlation between proximal HC and hip fracture was elucidated via concurrent body mass index (BMI). This data indicated that padding was not the primary mechanism for the association. The independent protection found in middle-aged women hinted towards other mechanisms affecting the bone strength.
