Lower postsurgical mortality for individuals with dementia with better-educated hospital workforce

Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Apr 10, 2018

White EM, et al. - Whether care in a hospital with more nurses holding at least a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree is related to lower mortality for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) undergoing surgery ADRD, was investigated. Analysis of data from 2006–07 Medicare claims, linked with the Multi-State Nursing Care and Patient Safety Survey of nurses in 4 states (California, Florida, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania), it was found that among individuals undergoing surgery, the presence of coexisting ADRD vs absence of ADRD offered more likelihood to die within 30 days of admission and die after a complication. The benefit of having more BSN nurses in the hospital included improved odds of good outcomes for all individuals and this had a much greater impact in individuals with ADRD.
