Lower plasma vitamin B-6 is associated with 2-year cognitive decline in the Boston Puerto Rican Health Study
The Journal of Nutrition Apr 12, 2019
Palacios N, et al. – In a cohort of 949 participants (aged 45–75 years at baseline; 70% women) from the Boston Puerto Rican Health Study, researchers assessed the link between baseline plasma pyridoxal-5'-phosphate (PLP, vitamin B-6) and baseline cognitive function and 2-year cognitive decline. At baseline and 2-year follow-up, they evaluated cognitive function with an in-person 7-test cognitive battery. The odds of major 2-year decline in global cognitive function (decline ≥ 1 SD below the mean), as well as decline in executive function and memory, were assessed via logistic regression. Among participants, increased odds of 2-year cognitive decline were observed in relation to lower baseline plasma PLP. A stronger association was observed among older participants and among ever-smokers.
