Lower limb amputations in patients with diabetes and peripheral artery disease: A time-series analysis of trends (2005-2016)
Journal of Vascular Surgery Aug 25, 2018
Hussain MA, et al. - Researchers examined secular trends in the rate of lower extremity amputations among patients with diabetes and peripheral artery disease (PAD) via analyzing a cohort of all individuals ≥40 years old who underwent diabetes or PAD-related lower limb amputation in Ontario, Canada (population, 13.6 million) between April 2005 and March 2016. They identified a total of 19,961 patients who underwent minor or major lower extremity amputations. Of these, 12,755 (64%) underwent a major amputation. Results suggest an increase in diabetes-related lower extremity amputations during the last decade. Renewed efforts are thus supported to prevent and to decrease the burden of limb loss among patients with diabetes.
