Lower gastrointestinal bleeding in patients with coronary artery disease on antithrombotics and subsequent mortality risk
Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Apr 02, 2018
Patel P, et al. - Whether or not patients on dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) or triple therapy are at higher risk of 90-day and 6-month mortality compared to patients on aspirin alone was determined. In addition, the risk factors for mortality were determined in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) on antithrombotics hospitalized with lower gastrointestinal bleeding (LGIB) at a single academic medical center from 2007-2015. Patients were identified using a validated, machine-learning algorithm and classified by use of aspirin, DAPT, or triple therapy. Triple therapy correlated with an increased risk of mortality at 90 days and at 6 months post-discharge. A link was determined between holding anticoagulation with higher mortality at 90 days.
