Lower dose of buprenorphine at delivery is associated with improved neonatal outcomes
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Jan 21, 2018
Miller LA, et al. - Researchers here ascertained whether a dose-response relationship exists between the maternal dose of buprenorphine at delivery and neonatal outcomes. Findings revealed a significant dose-response relationship between buprenorphine dose at delivery and neonatal outcomes. Shorter length of hospital stay (7.5 day decrease) and a 50% lower incidence of NAS requiring treatment were evident in association with lower doses. The necessity for treatment of neonatal withdrawal, coupled with the length of treatment, was observed as a significant psychosocial stressor and economic burden. These new findings have important implications for management, counseling, and reducing the economic burden of NAS in this opioid epidemic.
