Lower annual rate of progression of short-segment vs long-segment Barrett’s esophagus to esophageal adenocarcinoma

Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology Jul 19, 2018

Hamade N, et al. - Using the definition of Barrett’s esophagus (BE) in the latest guidelines (length ≥ 1 cm), researchers analyzed progression rates of non-dysplastic Barrett’s esophagus (NDBE) to high-grade dysplasia (HGD) or esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) in patients with short-segment BE. For this investigation, demographic, clinical, endoscopy, and histopathology data were gathered from 1,883 subjects with endoscopic evidence of NDBE seen at 7 tertiary referral centers. They analyzed BE progression (length ≥ 1 cm) to HGD or EAC and followed cases for a median 6.4 years. A lower annual rate of progression of short-segment BE (SSBE) to EAC (0.07%/year) than of LSBE (0.25%/year) was found. For patients with SSBE, they suggested lengthening current surveillance intervals.
