Low-value diagnostic imaging use in the pediatric emergency department in the United States and Canada
JAMA Jun 09, 2019
Cohen E, et al. - Through a routine examination of 8 years and younger in Ontario, Canada, and the United States, the contributors sought to compare overall and low-value use of diagnostic imaging during pediatric ED visits. Patients discharged from the ED and after visits of patients in which imaging is not routinely suggested were included. In the United States, abdominal computed tomographic used for constipation and abdominal pain was noticed 10-fold greater, whereas low-value imaging rates were noted in Ontario. Higher rates of adverse outcomes and lower use of imaging in Canada had no association suggesting lesser use. However, rates of 3-day and 7-day post-ED adverse outcomes were concluded similar.
