Low skeletal muscle mass as a risk factor for postoperative delirium in elderly patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery
Clinical Interventions in Aging Nov 01, 2018
Mosk CA, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective observational cohort study of 251 elderly patients (mean age, 76 years) undergoing colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery to determine the relationship between preoperative low skeletal muscle mass (LSMM) and postoperative delirium (POD), and to design a model to predict POD. Observations revealed POD to be independently associated with age, history of delirium, LSMM, and malnourishment or physical dependency. The model developed was suggested to have a potential for identifying patients at an increased risk for delirium. Intensive monitoring may prove beneficial in preventing POD among these patients.
