Low serum transthyretin levels predict stroke-associated pneumonia
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Dec 15, 2021
Qiu H, Song J, Hu J, et al. - The potential relationship between transthyretin levels and stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP) has been investigated.
This study was performed including 920 patients.
Measurement of serum transthyretin levels was done within 24 hours of admission.
SAP was diagnosed in 123 patients (13.4%, 77 men, 46 women).
Significantly lower serum transthyretin levels were recorded in SAP vs non-SAP patients (231 ± 80 vs 279 ± 75).
There appeared an independent correlation between low transthyretin levels (≤ 252mg/L) and the development of SAP.
Researchers noted worse clinical outcomes for patients with SAP relative to those without SAP.
