Low serum creatinine and risk of diabetes: The Japan Epidemiology Collaboration on Occupational Health Study
Journal of Diabetes Investigation Feb 19, 2019
Hu H, et al. - In this investigation, researchers assessed if serum creatinine levels were related to risk of diabetes, defined as either HbA1c levels ≥6.5%, random glucose levels ≥200 mg/dL, fasting glucose levels ≥126 mg/dL, or receiving antidiabetic treatment. The study sample consisted of 31,343 male diabetes-free workers between the ages of 20 and 64. Findings suggested an association of low serum creatinine with an increased risk of diabetes, and that the serum creatinine-diabetes association in older adults was more pronounced vs younger adults. They recommended that serum creatinine levels be used to detect people at high diabetes risk.
