Low serum albumin correlates with adverse events following surgery for male urinary incontinence: Analysis of the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Project
Urology Dec 26, 2019
Ginsburg KB, et al. - CPT codes of individuals who were undergoing artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) and sling placement, revision, and removal in the American Colleague of Surgeons National Surgery Quality Improvement Program database (ACS NSQIP) were identified in order to examine the incidence and risk factors related to AUS and male urethral sling (MUS) placement, revision, and removal. A total of 2,792 individuals underwent surgical treatment for SUI in the ACS NSQIP database from 2008-2016. Surgical treatment for SUI was observed to be well tolerated with acceptable levels of perioperative adverse events. Low serum albumin (< 3.5ng/dL) was related to perioperative adverse events. Thus, the data may influence preoperative decision making and direct future quality to enhance efforts at the greatest risk individuals to help minimize perioperative morbidity and mortality.
