Low serum albumin: A significant predictor of reduced survival in patients with chronic heart failure

Clinical Cardiology Mar 18, 2019

Gotsman I, et al. - In a real-world cohort of patients with heart failure (HF), researchers investigated the impact of albumin levels on clinical outcome (cardiac-related hospitalizations and death). Overall 5,779 HF patients were examined and followed-up for 576 days. The median serum albumin was 4.0 g/dL (interquartile range 3.7-4.2). Significant association of decreasing quartiles of albumin with mortality was evident upon Cox regression analysis following adjustment for significant predictors. A direct association between reduced albumin levels and increased mortality was also found. Increased cardiac-related hospitalizations were also significantly predicted by decreasing quartiles of albumin. In all, a worse outcome was significantly predicted by low albumin.
