Low risk of progression of Barrett’s esophagus to neoplasia in women
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Jan 10, 2021
Allen JE, Desai M, Roumans CAM, et al. - Researchers examined the risk of Barrett’s esophagus (BE) progression to dysplasia and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) in women vs men in this retrospective, multicenter cohort analysis. They also explored comorbidities, medication use, and endoscopic characteristics that contribute to gender disparities in risk of BE progression. They obtained relevant information from a large cohort comprising patients with BE examined at six centers in the United States and Europe, observed for a median 5.7 years. There were 4,263 patients in the cohort; of those, 2,145 were eligible for inclusion, including 324 (15%) females. Findings revealed the presence of a significantly lower risk of disease progression to cancer and high-grade dysplasia in women. Experts found an extremely low risk of EAC among women with BE; this suggests that this subgroup of patients with BE may not necessarily require surveillance endoscopy.
