Low physical activity and high sedentary behaviour are associated with adolescents’ suicidal vulnerability: Evidence from 52 low- and middle-income countries
Acta Pediatrica Nov 20, 2019
Uddin R, et al. - Among adolescents in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), researchers used multilevel mixed-effects generalised linear modeling to explore the associations of physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviour (SB) with suicidal thoughts and behaviour. Global School-based Student Health Survey data from 206,357 students (14.6 ± 1.18 years) in 52 LMICs have been utilized. Findings suggested that high SB (≥ 3 hrs/day) can be an indication of adolescents' suicidal vulnerability in LMICs. Low PA can present a greater risk to male, than female, adolescents for suicidal thoughts and behaviors. In resource-poor settings, the promotion of an active lifestyle should be incorporated into suicide prevention programs.
