Low levels of serum β-carotene and β-carotene/retinol ratio are associated with histological severity in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease patients
Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism Feb 19, 2019
Wang L, et al. - In this case-control study including 24 control subjects and 62 patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), researchers investigated if serum β-carotene and β-carotene-to-retinol (SC/SR) ratio has any clinical importance with regard to the histological severity of NAFLD. They collected liver biopsies and evaluated the histological features. They conducted face-to-face interviews to obtain data regarding demographic, anthropometric and dietary intake. They used the HPLC method to assess serum β-carotene and retinol concentrations. Findings revealed lower circulating β-carotene concentration and SC/SR ratio among NAFLD patients. These were found to be associated with the histological severity of NAFLD.
