Low GAS5 levels as a predictor of poor survival in patients with lower-grade gliomas
Journal of Oncology Feb 08, 2019
Wang Y, et al. - Researchers investigated the roles of the long noncoding RNA Growth Arrest Specific Transcript 5 (GAS5) gene (a tumour suppressor involved in several cancers) in lower-grade glioma (LGG) patients using multivariate Cox analysis. They assessed the mechanisms of GAS5 expression in LGG (grades II and III) and high-grade glioma (glioblastoma multiforme, grade IV) by performing bioinformatic analysis using TCGA-LGG and TCGA-glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) data. In both LGG and GBM vs normal brain tissue, downregulation of GAS5 expression was noted. In both LGG and GBM tissues, low methylation in the GAS5 promoter region was also detected. Findings revealed an association between GAS5 expression and overall survival (OS) in LGG patients. Long OS was observed in relation to high GAS5 expression in LGG patients vs in GBM patients. The regulation of ribosomal biogenesis and translation initiation were suggested to be involved in the underlying roles of GAS5.
