Low FODMAP diet vs traditional dietary advice for functional dyspepsia: A randomized controlled trial
Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Sep 29, 2021
Goyal O, Nohria S, Batta S, et al. - According to this prospective, single-blind trial, a low FODMAP diet (LFD) and traditional dietary advice (TDA) improve symptomatically and quality of life in people with functional dyspepsia (FD). Patients suffering from postprandial distress syndrome or bloating benefit much more from LFD. As a result, dietary counselling for FD should be tailored to the FD subtype.
Of the 184 individuals tested, 105 were randomly assigned to one of two groups: LFD (n = 54) or TDA (n = 51).
Both groups demonstrated a significant reduction in SF-NDI symptom scores compared with baseline after four weeks, with no significant difference in inter-group response rates [LFD- 66.7% (36/54), TDA- 56.9%(29/51)].
Patients with postprandial distress syndrome or bloating had a considerably superior symptomatic response to LFD in a subgroup analysis.
Both groups' SF-NDI quality of life scores improved significantly.
Bloating and male gender were characteristics that predicted responsiveness to LFD in a multivariate analysis.
The occurrence of adverse events (minor) was comparable in both groups.
