Low-dose vs regular-dose aspirin for venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in primary total joint arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 27, 2021
Uvodich ME, Siljander MP, Taunton MJ, et al. - This study was undertaken to investigate the effectiveness of low-dose and regular-dose aspirin (ASA) for venous thromboembolism (VTE) chemoprophylaxis in primary total hip arthroplasties and total knee arthroplasties. Between 2000 and 2019, researchers retrospectively distinguished 3,512 primary total joint arthroplasties (TJAs) (2,344 total hip arthroplasties and 1,168 total knee arthroplasties) with ASA applied as VTE chemoprophylaxis. A cumulative incidence of VTE < 1% at 90 days was observed In 3,512 primary TJA patients treated with ASA. It seems that twice-daily low-dose ASA was equally effective to twice daily regular-dose ASA for VTE chemoprophylaxis, with no difference in risk of gastrointestinal bleeds or mortality, although this study is underpowered.
