Low-dose levothyroxine reduces intrahepatic lipid content in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and NAFLD
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Jul 15, 2018
Bruinstroop E, et al. - A phase 2b single-arm study in six hospitals in Singapore was conducted to examine the possibility of low intrahepatic thyroid hormone (TH) concentration in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and analyzed the impact of TH treatment in humans. Participants in the study were euthyroid patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and steatosis measured by ultrasonography. Change in intrahepatic lipid content (IHLC) measured by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy after treatment was the primary outcome measure. The data presented in this work showed ow-dose TH therapy was safe and effective for NAFLD in men, and that TH or TH analogs could be beneficial for this condition.
