Low-dose aspirin and the rate of symptomatic venous thromboembolic complications following primary shoulder arthroplasty

Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Oct 28, 2020

Kirsch JM, Gutman M, Patel M, et al. - The present study was conducted to evaluate low-dose aspirin and the rate of symptomatic venous thromboembolic complications following primary shoulder arthroplasty. Researchers performed a retrospective review of prospectively collected complications occurring within 90 days of 2,394 primary shoulder arthroplasties performed over a three-year period at a single institution. This study’s findings demonstrate that the routine use of low-dose low-dose aspirin results in a very low risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and medication correlated complications following primary shoulder arthroplasty. The data revealed that preoperative medical risk stratification can potentially distinguish individuals at high risk for postoperative VTE.
