Low-calorie sweetener use, weight, and metabolic health among children: A mini-review
Pediatric Obesity Apr 18, 2019
Young J, et al. - Researchers assessed how appetite, energy intake, and body weight are impacted by low-calorie sweeteners (LCSs) consumption in pediatric patients in this mini-review study. They found the diluted energy content of beverages with LCSs (LCSBs) is completely compensated by some children by eating more solid food calories at consequent meals vs children having sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), while other children display a reduction in total energy intake with LCSB ingestion. Most intervention studies, some of which were blinded, report benefits of LCSs on lowering excessive child weight gain, despite positive associations between LCS consumption and weight gain being reported in observational analyses.
