Low bone turnover in premenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus as an early process of diabetes-associated bone alterations: A cross-sectional study

BMC Endocrine Disorders Dec 04, 2017

Purnamasari D, et al. - Researchers evaluated whether changes in bone turnover occurred early in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by measuring levels of the bone resorption and formation markers, C-terminal cross-linking telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX) and procollagen type I intact N-terminal (P1NP), in premenopausal women with T2DM. When compared with non-diabetes mellitus controls, premenopausal women with T2DM indeed had a lower bone turnover. Independent of the duration of diabetes mellitus, this significantly lower bone turnover process started relatively early in the premenopausal age. In developing preventive strategies for diabetoporosis, understanding the early pathophysiology of altered bone turnover could be significant as T2DM individuals were at increased risk of fracture.
