Low anaesthetic waste gas concentrations in postanaesthesia care unit: A prospective observational study
European Journal of Anaesthesiology Jun 11, 2018
Heiderich S, et al. - Given volatile anaesthetics are a potential hazard during occupational exposure, researchers evaluated the concentrations of volatile anaesthetics (sevoflurane) in relation to room size, number of patients and ventilator settings in two different postanaesthesia care units (PACUs) of the Hannover Medical School (Hannover, Germany). The observed maximum concentrations in postanaesthesia unit one and in postanaesthesia unit two were 0.96 ± 0.20 ppm and 0.82 ± 0.07 ppm, respectively, and median concentration was 0.12 (0.34) ppm and 0.11 (0.28) ppm, respectively. They found low trace amounts of sevoflurane in both PACUs equipped with controlled air exchange systems. There was no exceed in occupational exposure limits.
