Low admission plasma gelsolin concentrations identify community-acquired pneumonia patients at high risk for severe outcomes
Clinical Infectious Diseases Dec 21, 2018
Self WH, et al. - Researchers investigated the risk for severe outcomes among adults with low plasma gelsolin (pGSN) at hospital admission for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). They measured admission pGSN concentrations by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 455 adults hospitalized with CAP, and identified that patients with lower pGSN concentrations had more severe outcomes. Median values were 40.3 μg/mL for floor patients, 36.7 μg/mL for intensive care unit patients, 36.5 μg/mL for patients receiving invasive respiratory or vasopressor support, and 25.7 μg/mL for patients who died.
