Loss of skeletal muscle mass predicts cardiac death in heart failure with a preserved ejection fraction but not heart failure with a reduced ejection fraction
ESC Heart Failure Sep 27, 2020
Matsumura K, Teranaka W, Matsumoto H, et al. - Researchers explored whether psoas muscle mass index (PMI) has prognostic worth in patients experiencing acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF). A prospective database was utilized to enroll 210 consecutive patients aged ≥ 60 years with ADHF. Incidence of cardiac death was the primary endpoint. Significantly higher cardiac death rates were reported in patients with decreased PMI vs those with preserved PMI. In multivariate Cox proportional hazards model, a 2.3‐fold higher risk of cardiac death was observed in relation to reduced PMI vs preserved PMI. Based on the findings, it was concluded that reduced PMI is helpful in predicting long‐term result in patients with heart failure with a preserved ejection fraction but not heart failure with a reduced ejection fraction.
