Loss of Cirbp expression is correlated with the malignant progression and poor prognosis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Cancer Management and Research Jul 30, 2019

Lin TY, et al. - Using immunohistochemistry, researchers sought to determine the correlation of cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (Cirbp) expression with clinicopathological characteristics including patient prognosis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). They found that T3-T4, N2-N3, M1 and III-IV NPC biopsies, and undifferentiated carcinoma, more frequently exhibited low expression of Cirbp, compared with T1-T2, N0-N1, M0 and I-II tumors, and differentiated nonkeratinizing carcinoma, as shown by TNM classification; this finding indicates that Cirbp loss represents a key molecular event in advanced cases of NPC. A significantly shorter overall survival time was experienced by NPC patients exhibiting lower Cirbp expression vs those with high Cirbp expression, as revealed in Kaplan–Meier survival analysis. An independent prognostic indicator for NPC survival was the level of Cirbp expression, as identified in multivariate analysis. Overall, a correlation of loss of Cirbp expression with malignant progression and poor prognosis in NPC was evident in this study.
