Longitudinal trajectories of fasting plasma glucose and risks of cardiovascular diseases in middle age to elderly people within the general Japanese population: The Suita study
Journal of the American Heart Association Feb 01, 2019
Ogata S, et al. - Researchers identified subgroups of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) trajectories with evaluating cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence in this study based on the Japanese population-based cohort Suita trial. Every 2 years, investigators evaluated FPG. FPG trajectories over time were derived while evaluating cumulative incidence of CVD, using joint latent class mixed models. On the basis of trajectories and cumulative incidence, several subgroups were defined. A total of 356 and 243 CVD events were reported during median follow-up periods of 17.2 and 20.2 years among 3,120 men and 3,482 women, respectively. Sharply increased FPG levels (96.5–205.0 mg/dL; 40 to 80 years of age) and higher CVD cumulative incidence were observed in one of the three subgroups identified in men. In one of the two subgroups identified in women, they noted FPG levels that increased sharply (97.7–190.5 mg/dL; 40 to 80 years of age) and slightly higher CVD incidence than the other subgroup. Overall, CVD prevention critically requires managing CVD risk factors, especially for people with sharply increased FPG trajectories.
