Longitudinal analysis of health disparities in childhood
Archives of Diseases in Childhood Jul 26, 2019
Oosterhoff M, et al. - Given that combatting disparities in health outcomes among children is a major public health concern, researchers focused on the extent to which socioeconomic status contributes to disparities in health outcomes, as well as the extent to which social inequalities in health outcomes can be explained by differences in health behaviours among children. This investigation involved 2-year follow-up data of 1259 children (aged 4 to 12 years) who partook in the ‘Healthy Primary School of the Future’ project. Health behaviours included physical activity and fruit, vegetables and sweetened drinks consumption. The data presented in this work showed a high socioeconomic background was significantly linked to better health outcomes. The results highly indicate that socio-economic background has a widespread effect on child health disparities, but give little assistance to the concept that lifestyle interventions can address social inequalities in child health.
