Long working hours and the prevalence of masked and sustained hypertension
Hypertension Feb 13, 2020
Trudel X, et al. - By analyzing data gathered from 3,547 white-collar workers at 3-time points over 5 years, researchers investigated if a higher prevalence of masked and sustained hypertension can be seen among people who work long hours. Clinic blood pressure < 140/90 mm Hg and ambulatory blood pressure ≥ 135/85 mm Hg defined masked hypertension, and clinic blood pressure ≥ 140/90 mm Hg and ambulatory blood pressure ≥ 135/85 mm Hg or being treated hypertension, defined sustained hypertension. Experts identified a link of long working hours with the prevalence of masked hypertension, following adjustment for sociodemographics, lifestyle-associated risk factors, diabetes mellitus, family history of cardiovascular disease, and job strain. The observed link with sustained hypertension was of comparable magnitude. According to the findings, long working hours confer an independent risk for masked and sustained hypertension. To minimize the clinical as well as the public health burden of hypertension, workplace strategies focusing on long working hours could be effective.
