Long-term variation in kidney function and its impact after acute myocardial infarction

The American Journal of Cardiology Nov 13, 2021

Ródenas-Alesina E, Cabeza-Martínez P, Zamora-Putin V, et al. - The long-term variation in kidney disease (KD) was investigated in patients with AMI vs controls. Further, researchers examined how KD is associated with the risk of major cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with AMI.

  • A comparison was performed between a cohort of 300 outpatients with AMI and a control cohort matched 1:1 based on age and several risk factors for developing KD.

  • After a median follow-up of 5.3 years, patients with AMI had more pronounced decline in eGFR (−1.15 ml/min/1.73 m2/ per year in patients with AMI vs −0.81 ml/min/1.73 m2 per year in controls).

  • There appeared development of MACE in correlation with a longitudinal drop in eGFR and newly diagnosed albuminuria during follow-up, indicating their utility in reclassifying the risk profile after AMI.
