Long-term survival and five year hospital resource usage following traumatic brain injury in Scotland from 1997 to 2015: A population-based retrospective cohort study
Injury Feb 19, 2019
Loan JJM, et al. - In this population-based study of 25,319 patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI), researchers examined if survival and hospital resource usage differ following TBI vs a head injury without injury to neural structures (HI). They included all 25 319 patients admitted to a Scottish NHS hospital from 1997 to 2015 with TBI and a control group of all 194 049 HI cases for comparison. Despite mortality risk for patients with traumatic brain injury being 7.12 times higher than head injury cases in the first-month post-injury, the two groups displayed similar post-injury survival over 18 years of follow-up. More inpatient, outpatient, and intensive care resources were utilized in TBI patients than those with head injury.
