Long-term seizure outcomes in patients with drug resistant epilepsy
Seizure - European Journal of Epilepsy Oct 05, 2018
Conte F, et al. - In the present study, researchers intended to identify adult patients with drug resistant epilepsy (DRE) and report long-term outcomes of patients undergoing different types of pharmacological and surgical treatment. For this investigation, they identified adult patients with DRE from a largely retrospective database of 900 consecutive patients with epilepsy, enlisted from two reference centers for DRE in Belgium. Of these, DRE was found in 640 of them. Despite adequate treatment, over 60% of DRE patients have ongoing seizures. The findings suggested that patients with hippocampal sclerosis were significantly more likely to be seizure free. On the other hand, ongoing seizures were more likely in patients with malformation of cortical development and those with temporal lobe epilepsy of unknown etiology.
