Long-term risk of thyroid cancer after initially negative thyroid biopsy results
JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery May 09, 2019
Bongers PJ, et al. - Researchers investigated the risk of being diagnosed with thyroid cancer in long-term follow-up among individuals with benign thyroid biopsy results. Observations suggest the occurrence of thyroid nodules in more than 50% of the general population. Historically, indefinite follow-up of thyroid nodules considered benign was done, often with multiple ensuing biopsies based on growth. Current evidence suggests that benign thyroid nodules have a low rate of malignant neoplasms after long-term follow-up.
