Long-term risk of skin cancer among childhood cancer survivors: A DCOG-LATER cohort study
Journal of the National Cancer Institute Mar 06, 2019
Teepen JC, et al. – Because there is a higher risk skin cancer development following radiotherapy in childhood cancer survivors (CCSs), researchers investigated the risks and risk factors for subsequent skin cancers, focusing on radiation dose, exposed skin surface area, and chemotherapeutic agents. They analyzed 5-year Dutch CCSs diagnosed 1963–2001 from the DCOG-LATER cohort study, and performed record linkages with the Netherlands Cancer Registry and Dutch Pathology Registry to identify subsequent skin cancers. They noted 30-fold increased basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) risk among CCSs. BCC risk increased in correlation to increasing skin surface area exposed.
