Long-term risk of cardiovascular disease in individuals with Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults (UKPDS nnn)
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism May 24, 2019
Maddaloni E, et al. - In this investigation, researchers assessed the risk of cardiovascular (CV) events in patients enrolled in the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS), according to their Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults (LADA) status. They measured diabetes autoantibodies (AAb) in 5,062 UKPDS participants. A total of 567 LADA participants were included in this analysis. These participants were younger compared with patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), and had higher mean values of HbA1c and HDL-cholesterol, but lower body mass index, total cholesterol, and systolic blood pressure. The long-term risk of major adverse CV events in those with LADA was lower in adults believed to have newly diagnosed T2D. However, after adjustment for conventional CV risk factors, this did not differ, suggesting that measurement of AAb in addition to traditional CV risk factors will not assist with CV risk stratification in clinically diagnosed T2D.
