Long-term results from a randomized comparison of open transinguinal preperitoneal hernia repair and the Lichtenstein method (TULIP trial)
British Journal of Surgery Apr 25, 2019
Bökkerink WJV, et al. - Researchers sought to report the long-term outcomes of the TULIP trial that compared transinguinal preperitoneal (TIPP) inguinal hernia repair with the Lichtenstein method. They contacted 302 surviving patients that were initially randomized in the TULIP trial and included 251 (83·1%) in the analysis (119 TIPP, 132 Lichtenstein). A median follow-up of 85 (range 74–117) months was done. Outcomes suggest the durability of both TIPP and Lichtenstein hernia repairs. Reassurance could be provided to patients with chronic postoperative inguinal pain after 1 year that the groin pain tends to fade over time.
