Long-term results and follow-up examinations after endovascular embolization for unruptured cerebral aneurysms
American Journal of Neuroradiology Jul 14, 2019
Murakami T, et al. - One hundred forty-eight unruptured aneurysms that were treated with endovascular coil embolization between April 2006 and March 2011 were recruited by the researchers in a retrospective study in order to examine long-term outcomes following endovascular embolization for unruptured cerebral aneurysms and estimate the periods from embolization to recanalization and retreatment. Out of 148 aneurysms, 116 were assessed. Time-of-flight MR angiography was conducted at 1 day, 3–6 months, 1 year following the procedure, and every year thereafter. Within 2 years, recanalization was noted in 19 aneurysms and retreatment for recanalization was conducted in 8 aneurysms. In any aneurysms that had been stable in the first 2 years following embolization, no recanalization was discovered. A significant association of a larger maximum aneurysm size with recanalization was ascertained. Hence, during a mean follow-up of 7 years, aneurysms in which recanalization was not seen within 2 years following endovascular coil embolization were concluded as stable. Moreover, in order to consider the appropriate span or frequency of follow-up imaging for embolized cerebral aneurysms, these outcomes could be necessary.
