Long term renal survival of pediatric patients with lupus nephritis
Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation Apr 14, 2021
Demir S, Gülhan B, Özen S, et al. - Researchers focused on baseline clinical characteristics, treatment modalities, short- and long-term kidney results of children suffering from lupus nephritis (LN). Enrollees were 53 LN patients among 102 childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus patients observed at Hacettepe University between 2000-2020. LN was present in 53 patients (52%). Class IV LN (54.7%) was the most common histopathological class, followed by class III LN (22.6%). The 5- and 10-year renal survival rates in the overall LN cohort were estimated to be 92% and 85.7%, respectively. Mycophenolate mofetil and Cyclophosphamide treated groups exhibited significantly higher remission rate at 6th month vs other combination therapies. The identified best predictors of poor renal outcome included male gender, failure to attain remission at 6 th and at 12 th months, and needing dialysis at the time of diagnosis. Thus, it is important to ensure appropriate and aggressive management of pediatric LN in order to obtain and maintain remisson.
