Long-term renal follow-up of children treated with cisplatin, carboplatin, or ifosfamide: A pilot study
Pediatric Nephrology Oct 29, 2018
McMahon KR, et al. - In this single-center longitudinal pilot study, researchers analyzed chemotherapy-associated acute kidney injury (AKI) and late kidney outcomes utilizing standardized definitions in 23 children who participated in a prior study during cisplatin, carboplatin, or ifosfamide treatment. They performed a retrospective review of patients' medical charts. Chronic kidney disease (CKD), electrolyte-CKD, and hypertension was detected in 7/22 (32%), 11/23 (48%), and 2/20 (10%) patients, respectively, when examined a median 5.7 years post-chemotherapy. Either CKD, electrolyte-CKD, or hypertension was detected in fifteen out of 23 patients (65%). Overall, a high prevalence of late kidney abnormalities was observed using standardized outcome definitions in this study population of children treated with cisplatin, carboplatin, or ifosfamide.
